History
The history of Solan District Police is assumed from the day, the district was formed.
Solan district came into existence on 1st September, 1972 when after the re-organisation
of Mahasu district some areas of Mahasu district were merged with Shimla and others
formed the new district of Solan. This district is situated in the southern part
of Himachal Pradesh and shares its borders with the states of Haryana and Punjab.
The district is surrounded by district Sirmour in the south, Bilaspur in the North,
Shimla in the East and Kalka of Haryana in the south-west sides. The total area
of the district is 1936 Sq. Kms, and it has a population of 3, 39, 319 souls according
to 2011 census. This district is divided into 4 Revenue Sub-Divisions viz. Solan,
Nalagarh, Kandaghat and Arki.
With the formation of the Solan District, the organisation, which took care of law
& order in the jurisdiction of the district, came to be known as Solan Police,
and its head office was created in the center of Solan. This newly formed Solan
Police, was firstly headed and supervised by Sh. I. N. S. Sandhu, IPS who joined
as the Superintendent of Police on 01/09/1972. With the passage of time, the District
Solan Police witnessed tremendous changes in respect of its supervisory officers,
SDPO Offices, Police Lines, Police Stations and Police Posts etc.
With the advent of industrialisation in Baddi-Nalagarh area of the district, crime
and pattern of crime saw a tremendous change. Migrant labour from other states posed
its own challange and traffic became an increasing concern. Thus in the year, 2009
a seprate police district of BBN (Baddi, Barotiwala & Nalagarh) was carved out
of the Solan district and Solan became the first district to have two Superintendent
Police Offices.
Presently, the headquarters of Solan Police is situated in the heart of Solan city
and is headed by a Superintendent Police who is ably assisted by Additional Superintendent
of Police. Apart from them, a Deputy Superintendent of Police is positioned in the
head office and two Deputy Superintendents of Police are stationed at Parwanoo and
Darlaghat respectively who supervise the work of Police Stations in their respective
sub-divisions.
The District Police Lines are situated in the outskirts of the city, near Sabzi
Mandi Solan and has a total area of 85.5 Bighas. The Police Lines have a newly constructed
Administrative Block which houses the Lines Office and four double storey barracks
for accomodating police personnels. In addition to this, the Police Lines have residential
quarters for the families of Police Personels and a massive parade ground for holding
routine parades and other outdoor activities.
